Health & Safety Training

Quality bespoke training that meets your needs and budget

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires you to provide information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of your employees. (SFAIRP).

This is expanded by the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, which require you to identify situations where health and safety training is particularly important e.g. when people start work,  exposure to existing or new risks and where skills need updating.        You must provide this training during working hours and not at the expense of your employees. Special arrangements may be needed for part-timers or shift workers.

A competent, trained workforce can dramatically reduce risk and improve bottom line HSE performance and reduce the time and cost for example associated with accident and incidents.

Paradigm have extensive experience in carrying out training needs analysis, developing and delivering health and safety training at all levels of organisations. We can provide you with a quality training service that meets your requirements and budget regardless of your organisational size or geographical location.

Behavioural Safety (1 Day or a ½ Day Introduction)
Getting safety right means understanding, engaging and aligning all the different levels of an organisation.

Behaviour and human factors can affect the general impact of how workers' physical and mental health can be affected by these and other factors.

Whilst front line workers are present at the point of exposure and are critical to safety improvement and need to be accountable for their actions, there is a limit in the scope of their impact. Supervisors and managers make decisions about resources and organisational direction, all of which have an influence on the behaviour at the front line.

When an organisation's culture is healthy, the activities of employees at every level contribute to a platform on which safety and other critical business performance can be built.

Paradigm's approach is based on a model that defines the elements that influence safety outcomes and help organisations connect employees at every level.

We provide a number of bespoke behavioural courses that include:

  • An introduction into behavioural based safety
  • Work place and task behavioural observations (task and process safety)
  • Cultural engineering
  • 'Leadership in HSE' workshops
  • ABC analysis
  • Accident incident behavioural analysis

Please telephone for details.

Human Factors (1 Day)

The Health and Safety Executive have frequently stated that consideration of human factors is a critical and often neglected element in the assessment of risk (HSG 48). Organisations today must recognise the critical need to understand, manage and improve human factors.

Often the layers of control we rely upon are active or people dependant and are thereby fallible or vulnerable to error. The course is designed to provide delegates with an understanding and overview of how human factors influence risk. It will provide the tools and techniques for systematically identifying and practically addressing performance influencing factors and safety critical tasks.

Who should attend?

  • Managers and staff wanting to expand their knowledge of risk and the part human error plays in it
  • Organisations wanting to manage performance influencing factors particularly related to safety critical tasks
  • Managers and staff who want to ensure that human factors have been considered as part of their assessment of risk
  • Managers who need to address human factors in safety cases including COMAH

What will you learn?

  • The psychology of human error
  • Human reliability assessment techniques
  • Criticality screening of tasks and task analysis
  • Quantification of human error and how to predict it
  • How to incorporate human factors in safety cases

Water Management - Legionella (1 Day or a ½ Day Introduction)

Legionnaires' disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia which can affect anybody but which principally affects those who are susceptible because of age, illness, immunosuppression, smoking etc.

It is caused by the bacterium Legionella Pneumophila and related bacteria which is commonly found in purpose built water systems such as cooling towers, evaporative condensers and whirlpool spas. With several major outbreaks and high profile prosecutions under the Health & Safety at Work Act it is now more important than ever that organisations and individuals understand their legal duties and the serious consequences of a failure to comply with the law.

To comply with the Health and Safety Executive's guidance, Duty Holder's are required to operate, monitor, maintain and treat water systems in their premises. Paradigm deliver several differing courses all with the overall aim of providing a level of transferable knowledge with the focus on managing arrangements responsibly.

The 3 courses we provide:

  • An introduction overview to Legionella and Legionnaires' disease and the requirements of the Law (1/2 day)
  • Intermediate training for staff, managers and duty holders involved with managing Legionella (1/2 day)
  • An advanced course for engineers and professionals who are required to deliver the management system arrangements i.e. water treatment, risk assessments and maintenance. (1 day)
CDM - Introduction - (1 Day or a ½ Day Introduction)

Everyone controlling site work has health and safety responsibilities. Checking that working conditions are healthy and safe before work begins and ensuring that the proposed work is not going to put others at risk requires planning and organisation. This applies whatever the size of the site.

The CDM Regulations 2007 came into effect on the 6th of April 2007 and replaced both the CDM Regulations 1994 and the Construction (Health, Safety &Welfare) Regulations 1996 with the aim of:

  • Improving health and safety in the work place
  • Selecting the right people for the right job at the right time to manage the risks throughout the life cycle of a project
  • Focusing on effective planning and managing the risk - not just the paperwork

The ½ day session is an introduction to the CDM regulations and is suitable for personnel at all levels and covers:

  • Overview of the legislation - duties under the regulation.
  • The roles and responsibilities of the various Duty Holder's including:
    • Clients, CDM co-ordinators, Designers, Principal contractors & contractors
  • Requirements, content and purpose of a CDM Health and Safety plan.
  • Site Management of health & safety
  • Competence & training
  • Worker engagement, communication and personal accountability.

The 1 day session builds on the introduction but covers the application of CDM in greater detail. This course is suited to those who have to demonstrate a level of understanding of CDM and be able to transfer that knowledge effectively throughout the life cycle of a project in a supervisory/management capacity.

BSC Level 2 Certificate in Supervising Staff Safely (3 Day)

The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 is a landmark in law. For the first time companies and individuals can be found guilty of corporate manslaughter as a result of management failures resulting from a gross breach of a duty of care.

The renewed political and societal appetite to increase personal accountability for those who put workers' health and safety at risk and to hold them responsible for such infractions with the threat of criminal penalties - including imprisonment - has predictably resulted in arrangements for Health Safety and Environment (HSE) receiving increased attention at management and supervisory levels of most organisations.

Developed to meet the needs of line managers, supervisors, team leaders, heads of department and junior managers, our 3 day training course provides participants with the up-to-date knowledge and skills to enable effective and sensible management of health and safety in the workplace.

The BSC (British Safety Council) Awards Level 2 Certificate in Supervising Staff Safely is a nationally recognised qualification for those with responsibility for the health and safety of others. It is accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and designed in consultation with employers, the Employment National Training Organisation (ENTO) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

This course is accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) at Level 2 in the National Qualifications Framework

Management of Change (1 Day)

Onshore major hazard sites in the UK (not including nuclear and rail) come within the scope of the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations 1999, enforced by a joint Competent Authority (CA) comprising the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Environment Agency (EA) and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA).

These Regulations require the operators to take 'all measures necessary' to prevent and mitigate effects of major accidents to people and the environment; to implement a major accident prevention policy including appropriate procedures and management systems and if necessary revise whenever changes are made that could significantly impact on the control of major accidents.

The Chemical Industries Association (CIA) has identified the following prerequisites when modifying plant or changing procedures:

  • Staff must be aware of the hazards associated with the work they carry out and be able to determine that the risks involved are acceptable;
  • Risk assessments must be carried out to determine the possibility and consequence of the hazards being realised; if necessary, appropriate precautions must be taken to minimise the risk;
  • All modifications  whether involving procedures, plant and equipment, people or substances should be subject to formal management procedures;

The main focus of the course is centred on change at the operational and site level and takes into account the many forms of change which can affect the management of major hazards. For example, changes to roles and responsibilities, organisational structure, staffing levels or any other change that may directly or indirectly affect the control of plant equipment or operation, such as expertise for design, engineering support and procurement. These examples of change can impact reporting relationships, objectives, resources, hardware, management systems, plant operation and so on.

Although the course is specifically about major accident prevention, the processes outlined in the course also have benefits for other aspects of health, safety and environmental management including commercial risk.

Noise at Work Good Practice (1 Day)

The issues with noise at work are being listened to as more people become aware of the risks and suffer the consequences.

Noise is often defined as 'unwanted sound' and its loudness is measured in decibels (dB).

Noise becomes dangerous when people are exposed to it at high levels for prolonged periods.

It is estimated that more than a million UK workers are exposed to excessive noise levels of which around 170,000 suffer deafness, tinnitus or other ear conditions because of excessive noise at work.

Excessive noise is prevalent in industries such as construction, engineering and manufacturing however teachers, musicians, call centre workers and bar staff are also amongst those at risk.

The course looks at what companies and individuals can do to protect themselves and minimise any potential for permanent hearing loss.

Areas covered include:

  • What is noise?
  • How do we hear?
  • What is noise induced hearing loss?
  • Who's at risk?
  • What are the requirements of the Control of Noise at Work Regulations?
  • Information to help you implement a noise management programme.

This ½ day asbestos awareness course is one of our foundation courses pitched at entry level and is suitable for all staff providing an introduction and awareness of the dangers of asbestos.

Asbestos is a hidden killer responsible for around 4000 deaths a year (Ref HSE Website http://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/dangerous.htm.11/01/2011.)

Asbestos fibres are prevalent in many products in the work place environment in the UK. Consequently people are exposed to varying levels of fibres, often without their knowledge. When these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases.

A key factor in the risk of developing an asbestos-related disease is the total number of fibres breathed in.
